SWPS: Computer Science Institute, Warsaw School of Social Psychology

Warsaw School of Social Psychology is one of the Top 5 Polish private Universities. It was created in 1998 and over last 8 years has build its reputation for aggressive growth and building high quality programs. Its main strength is social psychology (where a Ph.D. program and Habilitazion “degree” are already offered), but it is systematically developing programs in other disciplines. The newest addition to the list of programs offered by SWPS is Computer Science. This is an example how SWPS is expanding its offerings. In this case SWPS has attracted the Scientist in Charge of this program, who has previously spent 17 years in the US as a Ph.D. student and faculty member at a number of Universities. They have offered him an opportunity to create a program that will be based on his experiences collected in the US. This program was recently approved by the Ministry of Education and will admit its first group of students in the Fall of 2005.

To complement the Scientist in Charge, SWPS is hiring a number of top-level computer scientists, including Prof. Roman Wyrzykowski, who is one of the lead researcher (with worldwide recognition) in the area of cluster and Grid computing. Furthermore a number of promising young scientists (fresh Ph.D.’s) are about to be hired. All these scientists work somewhere in the area between distributed computing on the one hand and computational intelligence on the other. This means, that their research interest will match perfectly with the goals of the proposed program. As an indication of SWPS’ commitment to high quality research, one can point out to its co-sponsoring the Intelligent Systems, Design and Applications conference, organized in Poland in September, 2005 as well as the XXI Fall Meeting of Polish Information Processing Society.

CV of the key person Dr. Marcin Paprzycki

Dr. Marcin Paprzycki has received his MS in 1986 at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. He has entered a Ph.D. Program in Computational Mathematics at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in January 1987. He completed Ph.D. in 1990 and since then he worked at a number of universities in US; most recently in the Department of Computer Science of the Oklahoma State University. Since receiving his Ph.D. he has published and edited more than 200 papers and volumes. He has also delivered more than 100 contributed and 40 invited talks. He is an Editor-in-chief of the Parallel and Distributed Computing Practices journal and member of editorial boards of 8 other book-series and international journals. Among these journals, the most important is the IEEE Distributed Systems. He has been invited to serve on almost 200 Program Committees of international conferences and experiences collected during their organization will be utilized to support all events scheduled in the program. Furthermore, he was elected Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Supercomputing Applications and is currently a co-Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing that includes in its charter cluster, Grid and agent computing. Contacts established within IEEE CS will be used to disseminate information about the proposed events and to bring up their rank and recognition. His original research interests were in the area of parallel computing; in particular high performance computing methods for Numerical Linear Algebra. Over time his interests have evolved to
include distributed computing and systems. His most recent (since 2001) research focus is twofold: (1) computational Grids and (2) agent systems. It should be noted that Dr. Paprzycki has just been awarded a Marie Curie Mobility IRG (International Reintegration Grant) to be
reintegrated to Poland. This grant is in the area of applied agent systems and is currently being negotiated with the Commission.
