RHUL - Royal Holloway University of London
Royal Holloway, located just west of London, is one of the constituent universities and colleges of the University of London.  RHUL has  about 7000 students.

The Computer Science department is rated in the top ten in the UK and is internationally recognised for the excellence of its research. The Department scored 5 in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The RAE ranks all university departments in the UK and the best departments score grades 5 and 5*.

The Department is a world leader in Machine Learning and many of the key researchers in this field are associated with the Computer Learning Research Centre - Profs V Vapnik, A Chernovenkis, R Solomonoff, G Shafer, and others. Other strengths of the Department include bioinformatics and computational biology; theory of computing including optimisation and graph theory, and constraint satisfaction; computational linguistics;

compilers and logics; and image and signal processing.

Some current research funding in the Department:

FP6, CRAFT, Prof F Murtagh, "WS-Talk: Web Services Communicating in the Language of Their User Community", 2005-2006.

BBSRC (Biology Research Council, UK), Prof F Murtagh, "Multiple Scale and Multimodal Data and Information Fusion in Human Sensory Discrimination", 2006-2007.

Medical Research Council (UK), Prof A Gammerman, "Proteomic analysis of the Human Serum Proteome for Population Screening, Diagnosis and Biomarker Discovery", 2005-2008.

EPSRC (UK), Prof D Cohen, "Tractability of Constraint Problems: Unification, Extension and Applicability".

EPSRC (UK), Dr C Watkins, with the School of Biological Sciences, RHUL, "Amorphous Computation, Random Graphs and Complex Biological Networks".

Prof. Fionn Murtagh

Fionn Murtagh is Professor of Computer Science in the University of London, and Head of the Department of Computer Science, Royal Holloway. He holds degrees (Mathematics BA, Engineering Science BAI, Computer Science MSc) from Trinity College Dublin, a PhD (Mathematical Statistics) from Université P&M Curie, Paris, and an Habilitation from Université L. Pasteur, Strasbourg. He is Editor-in-Chief of The Computer Journal, one of the oldest (50 years old in 2007) computer science journals worldwide. He is a member of the editorial boards of Journal of Classification, Journal of Multivariate Analysis, Neurocomputing, Artificial Intelligence Review, and others, and a series editor of the book series on Data Analysis and Computer Science (Chapman & Hall/CRC Press). He is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, and a Fellow of the British Computer Society. He is a member of the Knowledge Services Board of the British Computer Society, and a member of the UK Computing Research Council (UKCRC). He is a long-term member of the Board of Directors of the Classification Society of North America, and was recently elected to serve as President in 2008-2009. He is also a Board member of the European Regional Society of the International Association for Statistical Computing.
In the PPARC Astrogrid project, Fionn Murtagh is a Lead Investigator. He is currently a partner in the FP6 CRAFT project “WS-Talk – Web Services Communicating in the Language of Their User Community”, 2005-2006. He was Chair of COST Action 283, “Computational and Information Infrastructure in the Astronomical DataGrid”, a 4-year project up to end 2005. In research directly related to the current grant proposal, he has published widely in data analysis and signal processing over the past 25 years including books such as Multidimensional Clustering Algorithms (Physica-Verlag, 1985); Multivariate Data Analysis (Kluwer, 1987); Image Processing and Data Analysis: The Multiscale Approach (CUP, 1998); Astronomical Image and Data Analysis (Springer, 2002; 2nd edition, 2006); and Correspondence Analysis and Data Coding (Chapman & Hall/CRC Press, 2005).
