The University of Milan (UMI) is one of the most known Italian institutions for higher education, theoretical scientific research, and applied research, in several scientific areas including the ones related to information sciences and technologies.

The “Advanced Research Center on Evolutionary Knowledge for Design Innovation by High-Performance Computing”, in the Department of Information Technologies, has specific expertise in the following areas:

- information processing architectures, embedded architectures for signal/image processing and for process control, real-time architectures and systems, reconfigurable architectures, fault tolerant systems, massively computing systems, networking,

- system optimisation and operational research,

- operating systems and environments, middleware, interoperability, security,

- measurement and monitoring systems, system control, industrial automation,

- theoretical aspects of soft computing (neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, evolvable computing), high-level design of composite (algorithmic + soft computing) systems, machine learning, industrial applications of soft computing for identification, monitoring and control, signal and image processing, feature extraction and pattern matching, classification, bioengineering and biomedical applications, non-intrusive defect analysis.

Prof. Vincenzo Piuri

Vincenzo Piuri is Full Professor in Computer Engineering at the University of Milan, Italy. His research interests include distributed and parallel computing systems, application-specific processing architectures, fault tolerance, theory and industrial applications of neural techniques for identification, prediction, control, signal and image processing. Original results have been published in more than 150 papers in book chapters, international journals, and proceedings of international conferences. He is Fellow Member of the IEEE and member of ACM, INNS, AEI. He is Associate Editor of the IEEE Trans. on Neural Networks. He is Vice President of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society and Vice President of the IEEE Neural Networks Society.
