D3: Dissemination & Exploitation

Responsible: INA, IPM

Assistance: all partners

Objectives

The dissemination and exploitation activities will ensure the largest possible impact in the technological development and the network will enable a close relation among research (Universities and educational institutions) and commercial interests. D3 is an overall WP for the dissemination activities and includes further exploitation activities.

Publication and web activities are described in D4 and conferences, meetings etc. are detailed in D2 and cooperation with the academic world is detailed in D1. The D3 will only concern the dissemination and liaison activities that are supplementary to the specialists. It is recognised that the best way to spread the excellence inside the NoE will be an effective information system to inform each and every partner of the work and progress of other partners even from other specific groups these activities are detailed within D2. Planning and co-ordination activities, like workshops conferences and overall managerial meetings is included in D4.

The impact of the network is a much greater change of commercial and scientific success when the ambition is for take-up at a European level rather than simply national or regional. The spread of excellence does include dissemination and exploitation actions on both commercial and academic levels.

CARiMan expects to be able to make an impact on in the long run. Participants will benefit from the larger established network both in a commercial and scientific way. The possibilities will based on working experiences, developed tools (IPR, contracts etc) and methodologies (to finalise toward exploitation).

Dissemination

The main objectives of the D3 are to secure that all direct as well as indirect results generated from the complete set of CARiMan activities are made available in an appropriate form for all relevant organisations, companies and persons. Furthermore all project results, which can be regarded as marketable products, or parts of products shall be prepared for the parallel marketing process.

Dissemination is always fundamental for a European Research Project since the awareness about the results of EU funded projects is one of the major concerns of EC. Especially for the new NoE instrument the need for dissemination activities is more important than ever since NoE is addressing to the research community. The dissemination concerns the developed applications, the distribution of methods, the results of the analyses and all other results created inside CARiMan.

By the 4 major dissemination angles; articles, web, workshops/conferences and involvement in education the CARiMan network will have a formal structure for spreading excellencies. The D3 will ensure the messages and liaison activities are covered as described in the B4.3.

The creation of consensus on project undertakings is a fundamental factor that can increase market penetration and facilitate creation of alliances and partnerships. In addition, third-party developers and manufacturers can decide to increase their interest in carrying out relevant applications that exploit project results and services.

Dissemination activities are foreseen during the early phases of the project to provide to the community the first results and they are oriented in the following directions:

·         Dissemination through the CARiMan portal, electronic newsletters and mailing lists / dissemination through the websites, newsletters and mailing lists of the project’s partners. Through these dissemination channels, information on CARiMan events will be published, all IST Information Day proceedings, etc. The WEB-site will be published in the beginning of the project phase and will continuously be updated with relevant information and material used for presentations.

·         A large number of publications is expected both in conferences but also in journals based on the concept, vision, design and evaluation results of the CARiMan. Due to the size of the consortium and the complexity of the workplan a publication strategy will be derived early in the project in order to protect IPR.

·         Dissemination through CARiMan events: workshops, conferences, seminars, demonstrations and other activities leading to the involvement of different spectra of audiences from different domains.

·         Participation in externally organised events conferences, seminars, workshops and exhibitions at the national and international level. The information exchange will be also facilitated through the participation to EC concentration meetings and IST conferences, and forums. CARiMan will use these events as an opportunity to include experts and users in the process toward dissemination of the results.

·         Dissemination on demand; this includes all forms of information material which may be consulted by any interested party upon request. The provided services may enable interested parties to access electronic data and interact with the project information base in a friendly way i.e. navigate, retrieve, request.

·         Dissemination through printed material such as flyers, brochures featuring CARiMan showcases.

·         Dissemination through media; this more traditional way of promotion addresses selected journals newspapers, targeted publications etc. at a local or at a national level.

Market Analysis

The work includes a market review at the start and a basic survey of user expectations and commercial interest to provide the requirement analysis with adequate market information and forecasts. It also includes to the extraction of market characteristics and the determination of current, market trends and the present competition. More specifically this work includes:

·         Comparative study of organizations wishing to provide the services developed the project, in order to defining organizational and technical requirements for supporting these services. This study will also cover organizational issues for integration of the services into private, public, or social provider environments

·         Analysis of the market place and major activities with focus on frontage technology implementations

·         Basic user survey, where expectations form different interest groups, risk managers, technology providers and agencies having the responsibility of the monitored systems

·         User scenarios employing research techniques for evaluation of technology

·         In dept interviews with key market actors

·         Investigation for relevant features of the currently existing applications-services.

·         Identification and evaluation of existing products and generic services as potential components to be employed by the project

·         Current service providers

Early market reviews will give a basic understanding of the related commercial interests and will give input to the technical development in CARiMan. The market analysis will also give the opportunity to detect all the parameters of the project and the possible impacts before its implementation.

The research will target the supplier and demand side, the demand both from physicians (hospitals or clinics), the usability around the patient and the medico industry. Usability testing will take place in another part of the network and will allow drawing conclusions for the effectiveness of the project.

At the supply side the present alternative systems and methods of monitoring will be described in sizes and dissemination by areas of use. Features, functionality, benefits/yields and insufficiency will be described in order to improve disadvantages and achieve better operational results.

At the demand side the different user target groups will be defined both at patient/people side and at treatment side. User survey of different groups will provide valuable information for identifying the size of the market and the profile of the target group, in which CARiMan addresses to. The focus of the demand analysis will be to identify the primary perceived gaps between their present and wished patterns of behaviour in monitoring and handling the different monitored systems. Based on this, microanalysis the macro implications on the society level will be estimated. In conclusion this market analysis will show the way for the establishment of efficient future strategies in the sector of risk management.

Exploitation

The project’s outcome is expected to be implemented and commercialised in actual systems that face a problem that needs risk management such as: hospitals, environmental sensitive areas. The results will be exploited through the partners in the Consortium and according to the decision of the Consortium; also other commercial channels can be employed. A draft plan will be produced already in the early phase of the project. The information obtained during the realisation of the project will be used in the synthesis of the final plan.

The exploitation plan will precise the possible scenarios for further evolution and exploitation of the project results, during or after the end of the project. It will also describe activities promoting the exploitation of the results, including whenever appropriate development of a plan for the use and dissemination of the knowledge produced, feasibility studies for the creation of spin-offs companies managed by the EEIG, etc. The exploitation plan will also include the assessment, trial and validation of promising, but not fully established technologies and solutions. Moreover it will provide information about best practices as far as  the early use and exploitation of technologies is concerned.

The CARiMan NoE will encourage partners for further commercial cooperation and will use a fund based on 10% of income of the CARiMan activities to support partners in development and scientific activities that brings products to the market. The outline for this construction is illustrated below.

The exploitation activities may be affected by e.g. IPR, legislation and regulatory issues (e.g. privacy for location based services and surveillance, and copyright issues for content provision).

The work on exploitation will contain:

As a part of the exploitation work, the project provides a Technology Implementation Plan (TIP), which shall indicate all potential foreground rights and exploitation intentions, including a timetable for exploitation. It will consist of certain sections also for the public domain, which will permit the Commission to show the results and Community added-value of the work. eTIP will be provided with the final reports in the format to be specified by the IST program to the extent it apply to a NoE.
