HP in Europe

HP is a leading global provider of products, technologies, solutions and services to consumers and businesses. The company’s offerings span IT infrastructure, personal computing and access devices, global services and imaging and printing. Our $4 billion (US) annual research and development (R&D) investment fuels the invention of products, solutions and new technologies, so that we can better serve customers and enter new markets. We invent, engineer and deliver technology solutions that drive business value, create social value and improve the lives of our customers.

The May 2002 merger of HP and Compaq Computer Corporation forged a dynamic, powerful team of 140,000 employees with capabilities in 160 countries, doing business in 43 currencies and 15 languages. Revenues for the combined companies were $73 billion (US) for the fiscal year that ended October 31, 2002. Chairman and CEO Carly Fiorina leads HP, which has corporate headquarters in Palo Alto, California.

HP has been operating in Europe since 1959, with the opening of its first manufacturing facility outside Palo Alto, California, at Böblingen, near Stuttgart, Germany. From the outset, HP has been a stakeholder in Europe. The company has deliberately sought to grow, not only by relying on its marketing, but by actively investing in European manufacturing and R&D operations.

For fiscal year 2002, HP reported European orders valued at $27 billion, representing 37% of worldwide sales. After more than 40 years in Europe Middle East and Africa, HP employs close to 42,000 people in fields ranging from R&D, manufacturing, sales and support. In all, there are 39 HP subsidiaries with 400 distributor links, 1200 corporate resellers and 120,000 active resellers. HP is an approved supplier to the EU Institutions.

HP has manufacturing operations in France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. They are worldwide centres for client/server computer systems, workstations, personal computers and peripherals, printing and imaging systems. Through our European manufacturing, HP’s products qualify for EU-funded projects to East and Central Europe.

HP’s International Bank, located in Dublin, Ireland, provides lease finance, rentals and technology management services to HP customers throughout Europe. The European customer care centre is located in Amsterdam. Mobile e-services bazaars can also be found in Amsterdam and in Helsinki, Finland.

HP Laboratories, the strategic research organisation for the company, has its European facility in Bristol, England. It is responsible for one third of the organisation’s fundamental research and employs approximately 150 scientists and engineers from across Europe. Projects include Internet security and cryptography, digital media management, quantum computing (the EU QUIPROCONE network is managed from HP Labs Europe), advanced imaging technologies, mobile communications, the semantic web and grid/utility computing. This is world-class research that will influence the next generation of IT products and services.

HP is a long time participant in joint EU research initiatives, having been one of the first partners in the ESPRIT 1 Programme, and since then active as participant or coordinator in more than 50 projects. HP‘s partners include European universities and small- and medium-sized enterprises.

The company also conducts applied research and development in three centres in Europe.

HP is compliant with EU environmental policies: its operations include a European take-back centre for end-of -life equipment located in Böblingen, Germany.
