Publications in relevant journals

We expect that many of the activities within the CARiMan Network will provide valuable results suitable for publication in relevant scientific (medical, technical or neuroscience) journals. To make the results of our work highly visible and to promote their impact on the development of the fields covered by CARiMan, partners will be encouraged to prepare papers presenting the results of research in highly ranked international journals. The responsibility for publications will be held by leaders of Integrated Activities and Jointly Executed Research Activities. As the process of publication is rather long, we expect that during the first 18 months authors will be able to present just a few manuscripts presenting the research progress. Most results will be published later.

Intellectual Property Management

Intellectual property, often known as IP, allows people to own their creativity and innovation in the same way that they can own physical property. The owner of IP can control and be rewarded for its use, and this encourages further innovation and creativity to the benefit of us all. In some cases IP gives rise to protection for ideas but in other areas the ideas will need elaboration before protection can arise. It will often not be possible to protect IP rights (or IPRs) unless they have been applied for and granted, but some IP protection such as copyright arises automatically, without any registration, as soon as there is a record in some form of what has been created.

The four main types of IP are:

·                     patent: for inventions - new and improved products and processes that are capable of industrial application,

·                      trade marks: for brand identity - of goods and services allowing distinctions to be made between different traders and gain IP,

·                     designs: for product appearance - of the whole or a part of a product resulting from the features of, in particular, the lines, contours, colours, shape, texture or materials of the product itself or its ornamentation,

·                     copyright: for material - literary and artistic material, music, films, sound recordings and broadcasts, including software and multimedia.

However, IP is much broader than this extending to trade secrets, plant varieties, geographical indications, performers rights and so on. To understand exactly what can be protected by IP, it is necessary to check the four main areas of patent, copyright, trademarks and designs as well as other IP. Often, more than one type of IP may apply to the same creation.

In the CARiMan Network of Excellence, the participants will own the intellectual property of the knowledge resulting from the project. However due to the significant integration of the work it may not be clear-cut who owns what. Therefore it is necessary to lay down procedure for managing the intellectual property issues within the network. Also the participant institutions may have different procedures for sharing IPR and the governing laws in partner countries may differ. Therefore it is proposed to develop procedures for the management of intellectual property within CARiMan. The first phase of the work will be an information gathering and analysis exercise to determine the different practices within partner institutions and countries. Consequently a consultative document will be distributed to all partners to obtain their views. Finally procedures for managing IPR will be put in place. This work is outlined in the work package D4-WP2.

Flyers, brochures, and promotional literature for SMEs

The businesses in Europe are largely SMES in terms of number. Furthermore SMES do not have their own R & D facilities to develop products and therefore are most likely to benefit from the research findings of CARiMan Network. Therefore it is intended to produce promotional material to help SMES to promote their businesses and products and opportunities for further developing their products through schemes such as TCS (Teaching Company Scheme), CBP (Colleges and Businesses in Partnership) and FUSION in the UK run by the Technology Transfer and Innovation Ltd (TTI). TTI is now responsible for the DTI's (Department of Trade & Industry) programme of International Secondments which is particularly relevant for European Integration.

The work proposed will fall into two phases. The first phase will be to determine the best way to promote SMES in a European context and to find out the European wide technology transfer schemes relevant to the work of CARiMan. In the second phase, the useful information will be sifted and published both electronically and on paper.  Web based information will be published on the CARiMAN website, and via links to appropriate European organisations.  Published information will be available for downloading by SMES and other interested parties. A programme of mailings of printed newsletters and promotional information will be made to organisations identified in data acquired through our own research and commercial data bought for the purpose.

CARiMan Virtual Magazine

The circulation of information is especially important in a large network such as CARiMan. Moreover, the CARiMan consortium is organised in such a way, that each partner is linked to others by both horizontal and vertical connections. As a result a complicated net has been formed requiring effective information flow. This includes also the exchange of information on the progress of the research. The best way to avoid chaos in presenting achievements of the working groups is to present the results of the performed studies and research in a Virtual Magazine. The CARiMan Virtual Magazine will have two parts: real life and technical - each directed by a responsible Editor in Chief. The members of the Extended Management Board will serve as reviewers (We may need to add subject experts as necessary). The Editor in Chief will coordinate the review of the papers and will take the final decision concerning acceptance or rejection. The CARiMan Virtual Magazine will be published on CARiMan Web page. This way of publication will offer an open access to the results of CARiMan activities not only to CARiMan partners but also to everyone interested. Virtual Magazine will be organised according to modern scientific journals’ standards:

·                     manuscripts written in English,

·                     electronic submission,

·                     professional review (based on electronic correspondence),

·                     short time of article processing,

·                     high visibility.

The best papers will be recommended for publication in highly ranked scientific journals.

For the publications especially for WP4: CARiMan Virtual Magazine (VM)

Publications logistics and virtual warehouse

CARiMAN is a large and far reaching NOE with multi-level audiences being targeted through a range of the most appropriate media.  In order to achieve the maximum communications impact in a cost effective way it will be vital to match the publications output with the timing of the conferences, events and mailings where CARiMAN is represented throughout the exploitation programme.

This action will identify the full rolling programme of internal and external events when publications will be required or could be distributed to target audiences.  This could include direct mailing activities.  Some publications will be required specifically for certain events. The programme will be flexible and ongoing as opportunities are identified or become unavailable or non-viable. The action will define what items will be available and when to provide for the events programme and quantify volumes, print runs and logistics to support all events. It will run a virtual warehouse and stock list identifying items, stock levels, storage locations and owner/publisher.  We will produce a quantified, timed, rolling publications plan, focused at the dissemination and events programme.  An audit of publications produced and distributed will be conducted.

CARiMAN website and database

This workpackage is integrated in the JPA M2 and is devoted to the electronic interface of CARiMAN with the public domain, specific target audiences and related websites.  The website will carry the CARiMAN database and the CARiMAN electronic Virtual Magazine (VM).  The work will involve identifying rules cooperation with the editorial board, submission of papers and the other technical prerequisites for the database and presentations.  The team will develop a presentation system for the VM and a multilingual user interface for information access and retrieval.
