The University College of Nursing Studies is part of the University of Maribor. University of Maribor is the second largest university in Slovenia. There are about 20000 students enrolled at the University of Maribor each year with the academic staff of about 1000. The University of Maribor is highly active in regional Rectors' Conferences of Alps-Adria, the Danube region, the European Rectors' Conference and partner in many EU projects including 5th framework program, SOCRATES, Leonardo da Vinci and TEMPUS. University college of nursing studies has about 600 students and numerous international and “industrial” links in various projects. Research Insititute (RI) of the University College of nursing studies created in 1995 is the leading slovenian research group in the field of intelligent systems, medical informatics and nursing informatics. In the above fields RI has gained the international recognition and coopeartes with many other leading European, Japan and USA institutions.The main research areas and areas of expertise are novel hybrid intelligent systems and their design methods with real world applications especially in the medical and nursing fields, medical and nursing information systems (including heterogeneous systems, systems for continuos care, etc), and various methods and paradigms for their design, and in the design of educational systems. We co-operate in numerous projects with different health care institutions. The RI mission is to perform world class research in the field of medical and nursing informatics and to transfer the research achievements into real world practice in the form of industrial projects, consulting activities, seminars and similar. The RI has also the expertise and experience in EU projects especially in the field of education. Currently RI is the co-ordinator of the EU TEMPUS project ODIN – On Demand Intranet for Nursing Education and some other international projects in the health care domain.  

Curricula vitae

Professor Peter Kokol obtained his bachelors degree in Engineering from University of Maribor and his Masters and Doctorate in Computer Science also from the University of Maribor. He joined the Department of Computer Science in University of Maribor as an assistant researcher 1982 where he is now an Associate Professor and head of Laboratory of System Design and the head of Centre for Medical Informatics. From 1997 he is also the head of Research Institute at the University College of Nursing Studies and from february 2001 the deputy dean for research. He has written over 200 technical and research papers published in recognised international journals and major conferences and co-authored some textbooks. His main research interests are in intelligent systems, software metrics, and medical and nursing informatics. He has acted as principal investigator on numerous international and national research projects and he is the co-ordinator of the EU Phare Tempus projects ODIN and NICE. He had chaired international conferences and had numerous invited presentations. He is a member of ACM, IEEE and ASIS and some IMIA technical committees. He is the Vice - President of the IEEE Committee on Computational Medicine.

Details of present appointment:             Since 1977 I have held the position of a »full-time«

gastroenterologist at the Paediatric Department of the Teaching Hospital in Maribor, i. e. since achieving my specialization in paediatric I have been engaged exclusively in paediatric gastroenterology. The Paediatric department has 100 beds of which 15 beds are designated to the Unit for Gastroenterology and Nutrition whose head I am. I perform all endoscopic investigations as well as the US of the abdomen, the biopsies of the small intestine, etc.

My particular interest is concerned with the investigation of coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel diseases as well as the importance of trace elements in children’s diet.
